Chicago Office and Tourist Landmarks Get Connected with Wireless Distributed Networks for Mobile Users
Buildout Underway, Enhancing Mobile Connectivity for Students, Faculty and Visitors
LISLE, Illinois – October 25, 2011 – Two downtown Chicago landmarks – the 110-story Willis Tower and the nearly 100 year-old Navy Pier – are each benefitting from world-class, home-grown wireless technology installations that provide robust mobile coverage for many of the 9 million people that annually visit these destinations. The indoor and outdoor distributed networks, often called distributed antenna systems (DAS), are installed, operated and maintained by Lisle-based, ExteNet Systems, Inc.
With 3.8 million square feet of office, retail, and indoor public space, Willis Tower is at the center of Chicago’s financial district and is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Navy Pier, with 50-acres of parks, promenades, gardens, shops and attractions, announced a $155 million Centennial Vision that will upgrade Illinois’ most popular tourist attraction and expand it into the next century.
“With just these two Chicagoland network deployments, there are millions of square feet of office, retail and public space with wireless coverage,” said ExteNet Chief Executive Officer Ross Manire. “Across the country, ExteNet’s distributed networks are an integral part of every carrier’s indoor network deployments - - whether it’s in large hospital systems, university campuses, government buildings, hotels or athletic facilities.”
According to a May 2011 national survey conducted by The Pew Internet & American Life Project of the Pew Research Center, “Some 87% of smartphone owners access the Internet or email on their handheld (device), including two-thirds (68%) who do so on a typical day.”
This research adds to wireless industry statistics showing phenomenal growth in data transmission. According to CTIA, The Wireless Industry Association, “Between year-end 2009 and year-end 2010, wireless data traffic in the United States more than doubled, growing from 107.8 billion megabytes to over 226.5 billion.”'
The research reinforces the fact that office workers and visitors to buildings like Willis Tower use their mobile phones to make important business calls, or to take and text a photograph from The Ledge – facts not lost on Willis Tower’s management team when they made the decision to install DAS. The distributed network installed by ExteNet at Willis Tower handles advanced wireless technologies such as UMTS and LTE in common areas and offices throughout the building, as well as the parking garage levels.
At Navy Pier, upgraded indoor and outdoor network nodes provide wireless coverage throughout, including at the Family Pavilion, Crystal Gardens, Dock Street Shops, Festival Hall and Meeting Rooms, and the Grand Ballroom. As a major tourist attraction, with millions of visitors annually, Navy Pier is at the forefront of enabling wireless customers utilization of mobile technology to stay connected– whether on a mobile phone, or sitting at near Lake Michigan with an e-reader or iPad in their hands.
ExteNet Systems, named a 2011 top venture-backed company by The Wall Street Journal, provides the design, implementation, and ongoing network maintenance that will keep the wireless networks at Willis Tower and Navy Pier up-and-running and current with new technologies – and easily scalable based on future demands and needs for growth.
