Design Engineer

Title: Design Engineer
Reports to: Network Design Manager

General Overview

The primary area of focus for the Design Engineer will be to design and configure a variety of custom wireless distribution networks, and to create and deliver project specific engineering documents in support of ExteNet’s ongoing portfolio of distributed network deployment projects. This position will produce system-level designs and concentrate on the RF elements of the system, including active DAS and eNodeB components, passive RF distribution components, and antennas for all designs completed within the Network Design group. Primary inputs to this position will be venue schematics, network performance requirements, vendor preferences, and other design constraints.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Wireless systems design, propagation modeling, and simulation
  • Link budget analysis, design criteria and traffic analysis
  • Site survey completion and evaluation to identify RF coverage requirements, equipment location and antenna placement/orientation
  • Attend site surveys to include, but not limited to, working with clients, sub-contractors, property owners/tenants and company personnel
  • Determine capacity requirements and select equipment appropriate for those requirements in the design
  • Understand equipment co-location requirements for multiple operators.
  • Create system(s) designs, materials lists; establish project scopes of work, testing requirements, and design/project variables
  • Verify RF related site engineering drawings
  • Ability to interpret both electrical and mechanical blueprints
  • Network performance improvement (KPIs) and optimization tasks
  • Complete system designs, including but not limited to; specifying equipment and materials, system topology, and infrastructure modifications
  • Review and support the development of project close-out packages including but not limited to, the aforementioned and project financial performance
  • Interface directly with customers to support the sales process


  • Education: BSEE (MSEE preferred)
  • iBwave and/or Overture Certification
  • Two to five years wireless systems design experience
  • Understanding of RF propagation theory, antenna theory, and RF component functions
  • Understanding of fiber transmission theory
  • Knowledge of IP networks
  • General knowledge of RF modulation schemes and protocols, including CDMA, UMTS, LTE, and WiFi
  • Knowledge of RF components and their functionality
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Process development skills
  • Strong computer skills (computer programming experience a plus), with emphasis on Microsoft Office suite products
  • Have excellent English verbal and written communications skills
  • Willingness to travel, occasionally with short notice
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Visio and/or AutoCAD
